OTC FINE ART GALLERY proudly hosts this exhibition for alumni student, Gillian Moore.  Gillian’s show, “Embracing MY World”, is a visual testimony to her perseverance through college and the continued self-discovery of her own voice.  It has been an absolute honor for the instructors within the OTC Fine Art department to see Gillian’s transformation and improvement.  Not only has she become more adept as an artist, but also Gillian continues to shine through her individual confidence and unique creative voice.  We are honored to share her exhibition with friends, former art instructors of OTC and MSU, and the community.  We all wish her the best as she pursues her Masters of Fine Art in Michigan.

Please join us during First Friday Art Walk, June 6, from 6-10pm on the 3rd floor of the Gillioz.

Gillian Moore Artist Statement:
Due to my speech impairment, I have always felt that people judged me to be stupid or slow because I talk funny.  When they find out that I still like anime and cute plush toys at my age, it only confirms their quick judgment. My art deals with my feelings about how these people judge me just based on my speech impairment and how I like something that they consider childish. My character “Tree Girl” represents me, and the difficulties I have in everyday life in dealing with my speech impairment. The tree can form anywhere on her body because my speech impairment affects all parts of my life, not just my speech. It can show in my writing and also often determines how I interact with the world.  My character “Kitty” represents me in another way.  I paint her at the awkward age when playing with toys is becoming unacceptable.  My room was my safe haven.  It was the place where I could explore my characters without any judgment from people and family who didn't understand my fascination with anime. The pink haired girl, “Plushie Eater”, represents my family and everyone who disapproved of me liking anime and plushies.  Art has given me a way to express my feelings instead of bottling them up inside, and also lets people experience my world.

Gillian Moore Bio:
Gillian Moore was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1988. As a child, Gillian was fascinated by Japanese animation, like Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z.  As she got older, Gillian discovered the vast world of anime and Japanese culture. It didn't take long before she was creating her own characters and spending most of her free time developing her characters. During high school, Gillian's art teacher told her not to draw anime style for art class. She obeyed her teacher but still drew anime style on her own. In the middle of her junior year of high school, Gillian moved to Springfield, Missouri. After graduating, she spent three years studying art at Ozarks Technical Community College before transferring to Missouri State University. There she met professor Sharon Harper, who encouraged her to pursue her anime characters. In the spring of 2013, Gillian graduated with her Bachelors of Fine Art with an emphasis in Painting.

As a student at OTC, Gillian has participated in James River Basin Rain Barrel Project, and her painting Tree Girl won the People's Choice award at Art Walk's 11th Anniversary Art Contest hosted by OTC Fine Art Gallery in October 2012. Gillian plans to participate in this year's Art Prize in Grand Rapids, Michigan and hopes to pursue a Masters of Fine Art degree at Kendall College of Art and Design, located in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Crazy!!

2 min read

A week or so ago, I got a message from my friend Kala on Facebook. She asked me if I hear about Rachel and sent me a link. Now, Rachel is the girl I body cast to make my life ball jointed doll of my character kitty who sits in my chair that I painted (tilted is Throne of False Comfort). So I click on the link and watch the video and my jaw literal drops. With the help of her mother, Rachel poison her father and brother with antifreeze which lead to their death about a year ago. They got caught because their tried to kill her sister the same way and the nurse for her sister thought her mother was acting strange.

So my Kitty is tinted in a sense because she has the body of a killer and it makes me sad. Rachel was really nice and I liked her a lot and a great artist. Now if guys think that I'm making this up (which I wish I was) here the link that my friend Kala sent me.
